Campus Dining Services directs and manages all residence hall food service locations, University sponsored events and the food services that are contracted for in rented University space. Authority for inspection, citation and consultation of food service lies with Christy Bazan, Instructional Assistant Professor in Health Education. Ms. Bazan is a licensed environmental health practitioner and food safety instructor in the State of Illinois and a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
Environmental Health and Safety does not become involved in sanitation inspections of food services unless requested to do so by the department, or if it is to advise on the construction of a food service venue. However, if the McLean County Health Department receives a complaint, they will notify Environmental Health and Safety. EHS will contact Ms. Bazan and assist in any investigation as requested or deemed necessary.
As an ex-officio member of the Campus Dining Safety Committee, Environmental Health and Safety interacts with the department through complaint investigations and participation in dining center safety inspections.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requires that all public drinking water be tested on a periodic basis. Environmental Health and Safety collects eight samples of drinking water from various places on campus per month and sends them to a laboratory for bacterial analysis.
EHS also conducts required sampling to maintain compliance with the IEPA in monitoring water quality and lead/copper program standards. This involves collecting water from as many as 40 representative sites throughout the university's water distribution system. They are then sent to IEPA for analysis to detect the presence of lead/copper.
At present, the University has been moved to reduced monitoring since the samples have not exceeded the ninetieth percentile of the last two monitoring periods. If there are any problems with the drinking water, individuals and departments may contact Environmental Health and Safety to investigate the situation. The current Water Quality Report is available for viewing at ISU CCR 2007.
