Life Safety

Life Safety is of utmost importance at Illinois State University. Every effort is made to ensure that life safety equipment is maintained in a 'ready state' should its use become necessary. In addition to maintaining equipment, ISU personnel and visitors must also remain in a 'ready state' should an emergency arise. Personnel should be familiar with emergency response procedures to the extent necessary to promptly react in such a manner to avert injury. This includes Tornado Warnings and Fire Aarms. All campus personnel should be aware of what to do should a Fire Alarm sound or a Tornado Warning siren and alert be activated. (Reference Emergency Procedures of this Website). It is required that these procedures be followed in the event of an emergency and the siren or alarm is activiated.

In the case of a fire, the Normal Fire Department will respond and be in charge until the fire is extinguished and the property is returned to the control of the University. During this time, all personnel are to follow emergency response procedures and do as directed by Fire Department personnel. In the case of other emergencies, where outside emergency response agencies report to ISU, personnel are to cooperate and follow instructions of any emergency response personnel.

Anyone who observes any life safety equipment that is not functioning as designed or appears to be damaged should contact the EHS Office immediately. In addition, all questions regarding life safety or emergency response should be directed to supervision or the EHS office.
